Poster design, website and promotional material for “Honeyland”
“Honeyland” is a critically acclaimed documentary that follows Hatidze Muratova, one of the last traditional wild beekeepers in the remote mountains of Macedonia. The film intimately documents her sustainable way of harvesting honey – always leaving half for the bees to ensure ecological balance – while living with and caring for her ailing mother. The documentary achieved significant international recognition, most notably as the first film nominated for both Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature at the Academy Awards (Oscars).
I created the artwork and designed the poster, website as well as various promotional materials for the film. After watching the rough draft, I picked this scene from the film that I felt conveyed the essence of the documentary’s message and didn’t reveal the plot. The silhouette of the old beekeeper, walking uphill with her young apprentice following, as if to say, will the youth follow in the steps of the elderly and respect the wisdom to live in harmony with the bees. The slogan – “If one breaks the rule, everyone pays the price” – serves as a warning should we stray away from this path.
